The Project

To expand my knowledge of the graphic design field, I watched a video about the top 10 graphic design trends for 2021. I was then inspired to replicate each of the trends by creating a unique piece for each trend using Photoshop and Figma.

Trends in Depth: Organic Design

Organic Design is defined by natural colors, botanicals, and sustainability. I achieved this design by using a brown color palette and a friendly serif font.

DIY Aesthetic

DIY Aesthetic is the least clearly defined trend, because its definition includes the experimentation of different materials and mixed media. In this example I included elements like paper, imagery of flora and fauna, and paint.

Nostalgic Design

Nostalgia is powerful in linking the mind to happy memories and as a result has become a powerful marketing tool. Here I invoke my own sense of nostalgia by calling back to the 90s through geometric shapes, color, and 90s slang.

Illustration

Digital illustrations have become a popular component for many businesses’ marketing and design. With this in mind, I chose to emulate the “flat style” that is commonly seen in the digital space by excluding lines and using only color for shading and depth.

Jewel Tones

Jewel tones are defined by the use of gemstones and are used to denote luxury. In this design, I used amethyst to give this image a rich, luscious feel.

Abstract Futurism

Abstract Futurism is the combination of bright colors, geometric design, 3D imagery, and is generally surrealist and experimental. In this design I invoke these elements through the use of collage, greyscale, and neon accent colors.

Organized Chaos

Organized Chaos is the combination of anti-design with minimalism to create seemingly clashing elements into a cohesive design. In this piece I use collage, neon bright colors, and geometric elements to create an intriguing yet balanced work.

Symbols & Symbolism

Symbols help create a feeling of cohesiveness and oneness in communities when times feel rough. I chose to create a symbol of a bee, which represents manifesting abundance and work-life balance. I used a trending thin, white line-art style for the outline of the bee.

Diversity & Representation

The year 2020 has brought with it a more intensified focus on social issues, in particular diversity and representation. I decided to create a social media post mockup that highlights the importance of embracing diversity by using popular design styles such as collage, line art, and serif fonts, as well as a call-to-action to spread the word.

Serif Fonts

San-serif fonts have recently given way to a resurgence of the popularity of serif fonts (fonts with “handles” on the edges of each letter). In the piece, I used the gorgeous Rasa font, serene imagery, and a muted color palette to remind the viewer to never give up on their dreams.
